Elegant pair of early 19th century French Restoration period armchairs, circa 1820, crafted from solid walnut in the Rhône Valley of France.

The chairs display the restrained Neoclassical design characteristic of the French Restauration period, with gently curved open backs, beautifully shaped scrolling arms, saber-form rear legs and distinctive console-form front legs. The generous proportions and substantial solid walnut construction make the chairs exceptionally sturdy while remaining remarkably comfortable.

Particularly appealing is the warm, relatively blond coloration of the walnut, characteristic of furniture traditionally made in the Rhône Valley, where walnut was extensively used by regional cabinetmakers. The wood has developed a beautiful mellow honey toned patina that emphasizes the simplicity and sculptural quality of the frames.
