Chest, French, from the Louis Philippe period, made of solid walnut and rich and intricate burled walnut veneer. There are three large dovetailed drawers in façade, one top drawer concealed in the “doucine” apron.

The French Louis Philippe period case pieces reflect the same neoclassical proportions as earlier French empire or Restauration styles, here the lines are softened by the “Doucines” the hand carved curved linear detail on each end of the apron drawer. The case pieces from this period usually feature less bronze decor, or even no hardware at all, the preferred wood are indigenous to France (walnut, cherrywood) - mahogany and other exotic species become much harder to find after the successive trade blockades that took place after the Napoleonic wars.
