An elegant  French Louis XVI Directoire style commode, circa 1790, crafted in walnut in the Rhône Valley of France and distinguished by its unusually delicate proportions and refined Neoclassical detailing.

The walnut displays the beautiful warm honey and blond coloration characteristic of Rhône Valley walnut, with a mellow patina. The restrained architecture reflects the transition from the decorative refinement of the Louis XVI period to the cleaner, more linear aesthetic of the French Directoire.

The façade of the commode is arranged with three drawers, including an upper register visually divided into two sections, and is elegantly outlined with fine brass moldings. Slender corner posts feature vertical brass-inlaid fluting, continuing into gracefully tapered legs and giving the chest an especially light and sophisticated profile.

Finely cast gilt-bronze and brass hardware, including geometric drop handles and delicate escutcheons, provides a subtle contrast against the honey-toned walnut. The understated ornamentation and beautifully balanced proportions exemplify the restrained elegance of French Neoclassical furniture.
